"I can either exchange cash at the bank cash desk, or withdraw somoni from a card at the ATM, or convert in the app and receive somoni on a local account. Which is cheaper?" A fair question — and the right answer depends on what you have, how much, and how often you exchange. This article breaks down three exchange methods and runs the real maths on each.
1. Bank cash desk — cash exchange. The classic. You come to the branch with cash currency, the cashier processes the exchange at the board rate. The most common method.
2. ATM — withdrawing from a card. You have a card in some currency (roubles, dollars, euros, or a "regular" one in your home currency). The ATM dispenses somoni; your card is debited the equivalent at the payment system's rate plus fees.
3. Mobile app — in-bank conversion. If you are a client of a Tajik bank and have a foreign-currency account, the app lets you convert currency to somoni instantly. The rate is internal, usually close to the cash-desk board rate.
The widget shows the cash-desk rates. ATM and app comparisons are made relative to those numbers.

Say you need to obtain 1,000 somoni. We work out what each method costs.
Bank cash desk (cash exchange).
ATM (international card).
App (in-bank conversion).
Difference on 1,000 somoni:
On 1,000 somoni the gap is small. On 10,000 somoni — the ATM costs $67 more than the cash desk. On 100,000 somoni — $670 more. No longer "pennies".
A few nuances to keep in mind:
Russian cards. Since 2022 some systems work in Tajikistan with restrictions. Check before the trip. MIR — works at some banks, not at others.
International Visa and Mastercard (issued outside Russia). Work everywhere at ATMs in major cities. Rate — issuing bank.
Local Tajik cards. Work everywhere, without trouble. If you are a relocator, opening a local card solves many problems.
UnionPay. Limited. Not at every ATM. If UnionPay is all you have, check before the trip.
Week-long tourist. Brought $500 in cash. Best: cash desk. Exchange the $500 in one go at the cash desk with the best widget rate. ATM for the convenience of small spending, but the main amount — cash exchange.
One-month business trip. Brought $2,000 in cash + card. Best: cash desk for the main amount, card for small spending. Exchange $1,500 at once, keep $500 in dollars. Use the card to pay at shops and taxis.
Year-long relocator. Has a foreign-currency account in Tajikistan. Best: app + card. Gradual conversion via the app as needed, paying by card wherever acquiring works.
Short visit without cash. Card only. Best: ATM + card payment. Accept the conversion overpay as the "price of convenience".
Business trip with settlements. Large amounts. Best: cash desk with a personalised rate. See the article on large sums.

Typical limits on somoni withdrawals from a card at a Tajik ATM:
Card type | Typical per-operation limit |
|---|---|
International Visa/Mastercard | 3,000–5,000 somoni |
MIR (where it works) | 3,000–5,000 somoni |
Local Tajik | Up to the bank's daily limit |
If you need more — several operations in a row (if the ATM has cash) or a trip to the cash desk.
Beyond the three main ones, questions sometimes come up:
Payment terminals. In Dushanbe there are terminals for paying services, including with conversion. But this is not "currency exchange" — it is paying specific bills.
Money transfers with somoni payout. Receiving a transfer at the counter with conversion into somoni is an exchange option. Rate — the transfer system's. Sometimes cheaper, sometimes not.
P2P with local residents. Transfer to a local card in exchange for cash somoni. Works within a circle of acquaintances; with strangers it is risky. Not recommended without reliable contacts.
The cash desk is cheaper for amounts from $200–300. The ATM — for small frequent spending, for convenience. The cash desk saves 1–3% of the amount.
Set by your card's issuing bank at the payment system's rate plus fees. The real cost of 1 somoni is usually 1–3% higher than at the bank's cash desk.
If you are a client of a Tajik bank and have a foreign-currency account — yes. The app rate is usually close to the cash desk's board rate, sometimes better. For clients it is the most convenient method.
Depends on the ATM-owning bank and your issuing bank. Usually 3,000–5,000 somoni per operation. The daily limit is higher.
At some Tajik banks — yes, at others — no. Before the trip confirm with your issuing bank whether MIR is currently supported in Tajikistan.
Yes, at most large shops, hotels, central cafés. In the regions — less often. Some places accept cash only. See the article on cards in Tajikistan.
Technically — until you hit the daily limit. But every operation = a fee. Better to withdraw less often but in larger amounts.
Immediately contact the bank that owns the ATM and your issuing bank. On the spot, go to the branch of the ATM-owning bank if it is open.
