"I can either exchange cash at the bank cash desk, or withdraw somoni from a card at the ATM, or convert in the app and receive somoni on a local account. Which is cheaper?" A fair question — and the right answer depends on what you have, how much, and how often you exchange. This article breaks down three exchange methods and runs the real maths on each.

Three exchange methods in Tajikistan

1. Bank cash desk — cash exchange. The classic. You come to the branch with cash currency, the cashier processes the exchange at the board rate. The most common method.

2. ATM — withdrawing from a card. You have a card in some currency (roubles, dollars, euros, or a "regular" one in your home currency). The ATM dispenses somoni; your card is debited the equivalent at the payment system's rate plus fees.

3. Mobile app — in-bank conversion. If you are a client of a Tajik bank and have a foreign-currency account, the app lets you convert currency to somoni instantly. The rate is internal, usually close to the cash-desk board rate.

Rate widget: a benchmark

The widget shows the cash-desk rates. ATM and app comparisons are made relative to those numbers.

Comparison by real cost

Say you need to obtain 1,000 somoni. We work out what each method costs.

Bank cash desk (cash exchange).

  • You exchange dollars at the board rate from the widget.
  • Suppose the cash-desk buy rate is 10.90 somoni per dollar (you are selling, receiving somoni).
  • 1,000 somoni / 10.90 ≈ $91.7.
  • No additional fees.
  • Bottom line: $91.7 for 1,000 somoni.

ATM (international card).

  • Conversion rate set by the issuing bank, usually close to interbank.
  • Suppose interbank USD/TJS ≈ 10.67 (official NBT rate).
  • Issuer's foreign-withdrawal fee — 1–3%.
  • ATM fee (if any) — 20–50 somoni per operation.
  • 1,000 somoni / 10.67 = $93.7. Plus a 2% issuer fee = $95.6. Plus 30 somoni (≈ $2.8) ATM fee = $98.4.
  • Bottom line: ~$98.4 for 1,000 somoni.

App (in-bank conversion).

  • Rate — the bank's (usually as at the cash desk, sometimes slightly better).
  • Suppose the same 10.90 or slightly better — 10.95.
  • 1,000 / 10.95 ≈ $91.3.
  • No "top-up" fees for the bank's own client.
  • Bottom line: $91.3 for 1,000 somoni.

Difference on 1,000 somoni:

  • Cash desk: $91.7.
  • App: $91.3 (gain of $0.4).
  • ATM: $98.4 (loss of $6.7 versus cash desk).

On 1,000 somoni the gap is small. On 10,000 somoni — the ATM costs $67 more than the cash desk. On 100,000 somoni — $670 more. No longer "pennies".

When the cash desk is the better deal

  • A large cash sum. $500+ is cheaper at the cash desk.
  • No local card or no foreign-currency account in Tajikistan. The cash desk is the only option without losses.
  • If your card works poorly or is expensive in conversion. For example, a Russian one with a high foreign fee.
  • If you need a large amount of somoni at once. ATMs have limits; the cash desk does not.

When the ATM is the better deal

  • Small daily spending. No need to carry a lot of cash.
  • Part of the currency is left on a card at home. You withdraw in tranches.
  • Convenience beats saving. The cash desk requires a trip to the bank, an ATM does not.
  • If your card has a good conversion rate and low fee. Some international banks have very mild conditions for foreign withdrawals.

When the app is the better deal

  • You are a client of a Tajik bank. An account is open, the app is set up.
  • You have a foreign-currency account at that bank. You can transfer currency to the account, then convert to somoni instantly.
  • You exchange currency often. The app saves time on every operation.
  • The app rate is close to the board rate or better. At some banks app clients get better rates.

Realities of how cards work in Tajikistan

A few nuances to keep in mind:

Russian cards. Since 2022 some systems work in Tajikistan with restrictions. Check before the trip. MIR — works at some banks, not at others.

International Visa and Mastercard (issued outside Russia). Work everywhere at ATMs in major cities. Rate — issuing bank.

Local Tajik cards. Work everywhere, without trouble. If you are a relocator, opening a local card solves many problems.

UnionPay. Limited. Not at every ATM. If UnionPay is all you have, check before the trip.

Scenarios for different users

Week-long tourist. Brought $500 in cash. Best: cash desk. Exchange the $500 in one go at the cash desk with the best widget rate. ATM for the convenience of small spending, but the main amount — cash exchange.

One-month business trip. Brought $2,000 in cash + card. Best: cash desk for the main amount, card for small spending. Exchange $1,500 at once, keep $500 in dollars. Use the card to pay at shops and taxis.

Year-long relocator. Has a foreign-currency account in Tajikistan. Best: app + card. Gradual conversion via the app as needed, paying by card wherever acquiring works.

Short visit without cash. Card only. Best: ATM + card payment. Accept the conversion overpay as the "price of convenience".

Business trip with settlements. Large amounts. Best: cash desk with a personalised rate. See the article on large sums.

ATM limits

Typical limits on somoni withdrawals from a card at a Tajik ATM:

Card type

Typical per-operation limit

International Visa/Mastercard

3,000–5,000 somoni

MIR (where it works)

3,000–5,000 somoni

Local Tajik

Up to the bank's daily limit

If you need more — several operations in a row (if the ATM has cash) or a trip to the cash desk.

Alternative methods

Beyond the three main ones, questions sometimes come up:

Payment terminals. In Dushanbe there are terminals for paying services, including with conversion. But this is not "currency exchange" — it is paying specific bills.

Money transfers with somoni payout. Receiving a transfer at the counter with conversion into somoni is an exchange option. Rate — the transfer system's. Sometimes cheaper, sometimes not.

P2P with local residents. Transfer to a local card in exchange for cash somoni. Works within a circle of acquaintances; with strangers it is risky. Not recommended without reliable contacts.

Step-by-step: choosing the method

  1. Size up the amount.
  • Up to 1,000 somoni occasionally — card/ATM is more convenient.
  • From 5,000 somoni — cash desk is cheaper.
  1. Size up the frequency.
  • Weekly — cash desk with accumulated amounts.
  • Daily — card.
  1. Size up what you have.
  • Cash only — cash desk.
  • Card + cash — a mix.
  • Local card + foreign-currency account — app.
  1. Open the widget — check cash-desk rates.
  2. If you are near the ATM limit — the cash desk is better (cheaper).

Frequently asked questions

Where is it cheaper to exchange currency — at the cash desk or at the ATM?

The cash desk is cheaper for amounts from $200–300. The ATM — for small frequent spending, for convenience. The cash desk saves 1–3% of the amount.

What is the rate at Dushanbe ATMs?

Set by your card's issuing bank at the payment system's rate plus fees. The real cost of 1 somoni is usually 1–3% higher than at the bank's cash desk.

Can I exchange currency through a bank app in Tajikistan?

If you are a client of a Tajik bank and have a foreign-currency account — yes. The app rate is usually close to the cash desk's board rate, sometimes better. For clients it is the most convenient method.

What is the maximum ATM withdrawal limit?

Depends on the ATM-owning bank and your issuing bank. Usually 3,000–5,000 somoni per operation. The daily limit is higher.

Does a MIR card work at Tajik ATMs?

At some Tajik banks — yes, at others — no. Before the trip confirm with your issuing bank whether MIR is currently supported in Tajikistan.

Can I pay by card in Dushanbe?

Yes, at most large shops, hotels, central cafés. In the regions — less often. Some places accept cash only. See the article on cards in Tajikistan.

How many times a day can I withdraw somoni from a card?

Technically — until you hit the daily limit. But every operation = a fee. Better to withdraw less often but in larger amounts.

What if the ATM "ate" my card?

Immediately contact the bank that owns the ATM and your issuing bank. On the spot, go to the branch of the ATM-owning bank if it is open.
